The Rolex Submariner ref. 16800, dated 1983, is considered one of the most interesting models in the history of the Submariner. It is a transitional reference, situated between the classic 1680 and the later 16610 generation, combining vintage elements with modern technical advances.
This example retains the highly prized matte dial with tritium indices, a feature inherited directly from the 1680 of the 1970s. This type of dial, without gloss and with a more classic typography, is especially valued by collectors for maintaining the purest aesthetic of the vintage Submariner.
However, the 16800 introduces important technical improvements: it is the first Submariner Date to incorporate a sapphire crystal, replacing the plexiglass of previous generations, which represented a major leap in resistance and durability. In addition, its water resistance is increased to 300 meters, consolidating the modern standard for the model.
Inside, it is equipped with the Rolex 3035 automatic caliber, with a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a quickset date feature, another significant improvement over its predecessor.
